What is Psychological Counselling?

The most common conceptualisation of counselling is that it is a process of enabling others to make their own decisions and adjustments in the face of life difficulties. Furthermore, counselling aims to provide a safe and confidential counsellor-client connection. Empathetic environment aids the client in exploring their problems and developing a better understanding of themselves to propel towards transformation or change and live a more resourceful life.

Counselling may help improve relationships with others, resolve a conflict, manage crises, make decisions or address and fix specific difficulties. However, it differs from psychotherapy. The emphasis of psychotherapy is often on treating a specific condition, including anxiety disorders, depression or other medical condition. In contrast, in counselling, equal if not more importance is given to the process of transformation or change. This journey to awareness and change is as significant as the result of the counselling process.

Counselling professionals employ various therapeutic approaches, such as influences of psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, experiential and humanistic schools. In addition, counsellors may define themselves by the sort of problems they work with, such as a bereavement, mental health or marriage counsellor. Counselling goals may merely involve providing a safe and nonjudjmental space for people to share thoughts, feelings and experiences and gain insights. Furthermore, counsellor may be asked for more guidance and direction to help solve a problem or make a decision. Professional counselling services are based on formal training, licensing or accreditation and ongoing professional development and supervision.
